on the east side of Pine Island until they reach the crossing
guards at Sunset Strip who will cross them to the west side.
Additional crossing guards will be at the Oakland Park Blvd.

safety rules and obey the crossing guards. A fenced area
is provided for bicycles. All bicycles must be locked.
The school is not responsible for bicycle loss or damage.

Busses-School Busses & Day
Care
Students who live more than two miles away from their
assigned school may ride the school bus. Bus schedules
are mailed to eligible students at the beginning of each
school year. If you have a question about bus pickup time
or place, or if the bus is late, contact your Horizon at
754-322-6450. School busses and Day Care busses will drop-off/pick-up
students in the east parking lot which faces Pine Island
Road.
- Busses will be announced over the intercom at approximately
1:50 p.m. Students are not to leave the classroom until
that time. They are to walk from the classroom to the
front (east side) of the school for boarding. Students
in portables are to enter the school through the PE
doors (west side). No running is allowed.
- Students
are to walk directly to their busses.
- The number one threat
to bus safety is student behavior, which distracts the
driver.
- Students must obey and
follow the bus driver's directions at all times. Disruptive
behavior will not be tolerated. Please refer to the Code
of Student Conduct Book. We want this to be a safe year
for Horizon students. Please review the following rules
with all bus riders. Horizon Elementary School wants
you to travel safely between home and school. In order
to be safe, it is necessary to know and obey the following
rules.
- REMAIN IN YOUR SEAT AT ALL TIMES.
- TALK QUIETLY.
- KEEP YOUR ARMS AND HEAD INSIDE THE BUS.
- RESPECT YOURSELF AND OTHERS.
- KEEP FOOD AND GUM OFF THE BUS.
The above rules are for your safety and the safety of
everyone who rides the bus. If the rules are not followed,
the bus driver will give a referral, and you may be suspended
from riding the bus.
Students may not change buses to visit
with friends. A note from a parent must be sent to the
office to permit a bus student to ride home on another
bus, in a car, or by other means of transportation.
If it is necessary to
cross the street after getting off the bus, students should
cross in FRONT of the bus after receiving a clear signal
from the driver that it is safe to do so.
Only Transportation Department assigned students
are allowed to ride the bus.

honored between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Written
permission must be sent to school that morning stating
the time of dismissal. Requests for dismissal at all other
times will require administrative approval. This policy
is being implemented because the last period of the school
day is a very important one. The teachers complete lessons,
review the activities of the day, give directions for homework,
and provide information regarding the next day's activities.
Calling students for early dismissal is very disruptive
to the process. Those leaving early miss an
important part of the school day. Thank you for your understanding

|
Homework Make-up policy
The official School Board policy regarding homework is as
follows:
Students will be allowed two days' time for each day
of excused absence to complete the assignments missed during
the absence.
We realize that some students are concerned
about completing homework. Horizon's teachers want them to
feel comfortable knowing that they will have plenty of time
to make up the work. Any student who misses school due to
illness, for personal or other reasons, will be given his/her
make-up work upon return to school. Two days of time will
be allowed for each day of excused absence. |
Emergency Dismissal Forms
The Superintendent of Schools determines an emergency closing
of school. In the event of an emergency dismissal, it is important
that the school has correct information on record stating where
each child should go as well as the contact person. Emergency
dismissal forms will be given to every student. These forms
must be completed and returned. The office should be informed
when there is a change in this information.
The emergency forms
are also used to contact parents when there is an illness
or accident. |

Students are tardy after the 8:00 a.m. bell. Students ariving
at school after this time must report to the front office
to pick up a "tardy pass" before going to their

science, and social studies. Art, music, library, physical
education, and computer are provided on a rotating schedule.
Exceptional classes are offered in the area of speech, specific
learning disabilities, and gifted. Students must qualify in
order to take part in exceptional classes. |
Clinic
A clinic is located in the administrative area of the
school. Parents will be contacted to pick up their child
if they are too sick to remain in school. It is very important
that names and phone numbers of emergency contacts are
on file and current.
The school should be notified of any
serious illnesses, allergies, needed medications, etc.
which will impact on a student's health. This information
is kept on file in the office and should be updated whenever
necessary. |
Medication
A Medical Authorization Form signed by a doctor and parent
must be on file before any type of medication can be administered.
This form can be picked up in the office.
Students cannot
keep any medicine in their possession while in school. Students
